Welcome to Yonkers YWCA

The Young Women’s Christian Association of Yonkers (YWCA Yonkers) is an affiliate of the YWCA of the U.S.A., the country’s oldest and largest women's membership movement. We are a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization serving women, girls and their families in Yonkers and Lower Westchester. Located in a community of rapidly increasing diversity, YWCA welcomes all women, children and their families to join us as members or participants as we fulfill our mission through our programs and services.

Who We Are

The YWCA is a global movement of women - 25 million across the world - who are brought together by the hope and acknowledgement that together we can create a better world, free from violence against women and sexual abuse, free from illiteracy and homelessness, free from hunger and HIV/AIDS and a fully inclusive world where justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom, and care for the environment are promoted and sustained through women’s leadership.

YWCA Yonkers’ endurance is attributed to three factors:

  • its commitment to encourage women, girls and families within the community it serves to realize their potential and to experience the abundance of their lives by providing programs and services that respond to their unique and dynamic challenges.
  • its pioneering example as an organization led, owned and managed by women for women, and
  • its strength as an ethnic and racially diverse women’s membership movement.

Yonkers YWCA opened its doors in 1892 in borrowed church rooms in response to the deplorable labor, housing and health conditions facing young women and girls. The YWCA responded with housing, job training, health and physical education, community activism and social and recreational activities. In 1894, the "YW" moved to its own rented quarters at 32 South Broadway, and in 1895 it was granted a charter of incorporation by the State of New York. With a passionate desire to position the YWCA to meet the increasing and varied needs of women and girls., the Board of Directors and Members conducted the first ever fund raising drive in 1898 and purchased the "Prospect Street House". Its 15 rooms facilitated programs necessary to meet the needs of a growing City and provided boarding for young women in need of accommodation. In 1912, a decision was made to erect a new facility that would not only meet the immediate needs of the "YW" but which would see the "YW" well into the future. Land was donated by Alexander Smith Cochran, ground was broken in 1912 and the building was completed and occupied in 1914. The swimming pool was added in 1932, the children’s playground was acquired in 1946 and the parking lot was donated in 1964 by C.W.C. Associates. The "YWCA" today continues to be a valued multi-service center providing services to meet the needs of a growing, diverse and dynamic city. When the YW opened its doors at 87 South Broadway in 1914, it was said to include "the residence, gymnasium, gracious lounge, auditorium, class and meeting rooms". The reputation of the "YW" was that of "the friendly place". Today, the building is much as it was then, with the exception of the swimming pool, which was added in 1932 but closed in 1999 for renovation.
